This is the my 2nd revision; I'll probably flush out a few more details and the recreate/fix it in Illustrator:

Malform Album Art, Conceptual

My friend Gary is releasing a new album in a week and I'm finalizing the artwork. The title is 'Malform', consisting of 9 songs; the first 8 all different themes, the 9th bringing the themes together into a symphony--and cacophony-- of motifs. I was going for a 'Beast of the Abyss' illustration, highly inspired by a fellow, Hydro74. Here's what I have so far:

I've started drawing more pictures of friends of mine and this latest is of my girlfriend's sister, Kimi. Also, this particular illustration is a little more Anime-influenced than anything I've drawn thus far--but I kinda like it. Anyway, here's my progress:

New Sketches - Works in Progress

As I've been sketching more--sketching for sketching's sake-- I realize the majority of my sketches go unfinished and undisplayed. I've always been hesitant to show works in progress but from now on I'm going to make a conscious effort to display all of my sketches.

Here are a few that I'm working, two of which will most likely become finished pieces:

1a. Jolly Green Giant(ess), Sketch - Because who wants a giant green dude roaming around, eh?

1b. Jolly Green Giant(ess) - Painted

2. Tribute to Pete Postlethwaite - This guy was a really forceful and underrated actor who died recently. He is, however, excellent caricature material, no matter how much I respect him.

3. The Little Mermaid, caught - A truly little mermaid gets caught by a dame out to fish. The bikini gal's pose still seems a little stiff, but I may go for a more exaggerated pin-up pose as well as a simple, tropical beach background.

So the project finally has a name, but it doesn't have finalized components yet. For the final design, I'm waiting on the PCB and the addition of a capacitative touchscreen instead of buttons. Design 6b will be the drawing to be expanded upon:

SoundCast 'Dorothy' Project

Oh, and just for your information, this product will be used to wireless connect a surround-sound system. Here's the rest of 'em:

Yeah, it has no name so for some reason they're calling it 'Dorothy.' No matter, the point is, this is my first actual, factual product I get to design. I also get to pretend I know more about engineering than I really do--but in a really smooth way, ya hear?

Dead Design

This ship design has been in my head for a while and I've finally decided I need to kill it because it's starting to look way too similar to the 'Protector' from Galaxy Quest... Ah well, here it is:

Mobile Sentient Auto-Turret

This is an idea I've had where a ships turrets would be mobile and always changing locations on the out hull of a capital ship. Furthermore, they ought to have some degree of sentience in order maximize effectiveness. Anyway here's one of my sketches:

New Sketches!

Here are a few illustrations I've been working on, two whimsical, one more of a caricature:

A veiled lady with feathers. Nothing deep about this picture, I just like veils and smirks.

This one is going to be called "Underwater Rumble" and the octopus will be holding a deadly weapon in each of his tentacles. In the immediate foreground will be a diver's right leg and right hand dropping a small dagger. I've had this idea for ages and have done a few comic iterations; this will be the first painted edition.

The Angler Fishbowl; I thought it's be funny to see an Angler fish in a fishbowl at night while all the moths are attracted to his natural bioluminescence.

Lighting Test Sketches

In an attempt to get better at intuitively adding lighting to sketches I'm on a mission to reproduce a variety of photographic lighting techniques. Below are a couple examples of quick sketches for practice.

Art Nouveau Update, 2.13

I had been testing different iterations for her hair and settle on what's below. However, after changing her expression to that of a 'just-after-crying' expression, I may change the hair to suit her mood.

The hair was inspired by the work of this Dutch gal, Lois Van Baarle (loish.net). It needs a bit of tweaking but it's almost finished.

Belly Dance, Ambiance

I've decided on the ambiance of the picture, thus:

I've started another sketch today of a Belly Dancer, primarily because I was listening to music form the Balkans today... Anyway, with this sketch I wanted to test out colors first, before I even have the right gesture. New technique, we'll see how it turns out in the end:

Art Nouveau Update, 2.11

Although I've been influenced heavily by Alphonse Mucha, I'm straying away from his style a bit in favor of something closer to fine comic art and clay sculpture. I still plan on incorporating floral, flowing elements in the picture but it's probably best I stick to my own style. Here's what I have:

Art Nouveau Portrait of Jessica: In Progress

I recently had my friend Jessica pose for me so that I could take a crack at an Art Nouveau style portrait, influenced mostly by Alphonse Mucha. Whereas I thought this would be a fairly quick illustration, it's taking me a considerably longer amount of time to finish. No matter, below are the sketches I have so far:

Red-Tailed Klutz

After an exhausting day of hiking I decided that I'd like nothing better than to camp out in the canyon behind my backyard and birdwatch. I did so happen to catch a few photos of Cooper's Hawks and Red-Tailed Hawks--one of which had a hell of a time getting its footing on a very thin branch. Below are 2 of my favorites of the day:
